Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) affects millions of people worldwide, yet it often goes unrecognised. Unlike occasional worry about specific situations, GAD involves persistent, excessive anxiety about multiple areas of life that lasts for months or years.
Recognising GAD
The hallmark of GAD is chronic, exaggerated worry about everyday matters — health, finances, work, family — even when there is no reason for concern. This worry is difficult to control and feels overwhelming. Physical symptoms often include restlessness, fatigue, muscle tension, irritability, sleep disturbances, and difficulty concentrating.
What Causes GAD?
GAD results from a complex interplay of genetic, biological, and environmental factors. Brain chemistry imbalances, particularly involving serotonin and GABA, play a significant role. Family history increases risk, as does exposure to stressful life events, trauma, or chronic health conditions.
Diagnosis
A mental health professional diagnoses GAD when excessive anxiety and worry occur more days than not for at least six months, accompanied by three or more physical symptoms. Early diagnosis is crucial — untreated GAD can lead to depression, substance use, and impaired quality of life.
Treatment Options
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): The gold-standard treatment for GAD, CBT helps identify and restructure unhelpful thought patterns
Medication: SSRIs and SNRIs are first-line pharmacological options
Relaxation Techniques: Progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, and mindfulness reduce physical tension
Lifestyle Modifications: Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and reduced caffeine can significantly reduce symptoms
