Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development. It affects approximately 5–7% of children and adolescents worldwide.
The Three Presentations of ADHD
Predominantly Inattentive: Difficulty sustaining attention, following instructions, organising tasks, often appears forgetful or easily distracted. This presentation is more common in girls and is often missed because there is no obvious hyperactivity.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive: Fidgeting, difficulty staying seated, running or climbing when inappropriate, talking excessively, interrupting others, difficulty waiting turns.
Combined Presentation: Meets criteria for both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive types.
How ADHD Affects Daily Life
Academic Challenges: Difficulty completing work, following multi-step instructions, organising materials
Social Difficulties: Trouble with turn-taking, reading social cues, emotional regulation
Emotional Impact: Low self-esteem from repeated negative feedback, frustration, anxiety
Family Stress: Conflicts around homework, chores, and behaviour
Evidence-Based Interventions
Behavioural Parent Training: Strategies for managing ADHD behaviours and building positive routines
Classroom Accommodations: Preferential seating, extended time, breaks, reduced homework load
Social Skills Training: Teaching specific social skills in structured settings
Medication: Stimulants (methylphenidate, dexamphetamine) and non-stimulants (atomoxetine, guanfacine) are effective
Educational Support: Individualised education plans and tutoring
Common Misconceptions
ADHD is not caused by bad parenting, too much sugar, or too much screen time — though these factors can worsen symptoms. It is not something children "grow out of" — while hyperactivity often decreases, inattention and impulsivity typically persist into adulthood.
