Adolescence is a period of enormous change — physical, emotional, social, and neurological. The teenage brain is still developing, hormones are fluctuating, and social pressures intensify. It is no surprise that many mental health conditions first emerge during adolescence.
Why the Teenage Brain Is Vulnerable
The prefrontal cortex — responsible for impulse control, decision-making, and emotional regulation — is one of the last brain regions to fully develop. Meanwhile, the limbic system (emotion centre) is highly active. This mismatch means teenagers may experience intense emotions without fully developed control mechanisms.
Common Mental Health Challenges in Teens
Anxiety Disorders: Affecting approximately 30% of adolescents at some point
Depression: Rates increase significantly during adolescence, especially in girls
Self-Harm: Non-suicidal self-injury affects 15–20% of teenagers
Eating Disorders: Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder peak in adolescence
ADHD: Often becomes more challenging as academic and social demands increase
Substance Use: Experimentation can escalate during this vulnerable period
Warning Signs
