Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective treatments for anxiety disorders. It is a structured, goal-oriented approach that focuses on the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Here are some of the most powerful CBT techniques used to manage anxiety.
Cognitive Restructuring
This technique involves identifying and challenging distorted thinking patterns that fuel anxiety. Common distortions include catastrophising (imagining the worst-case scenario), mind reading (assuming others think negatively of you), and overgeneralisation (drawing broad conclusions from a single event). By examining the evidence for and against these thoughts, you can develop more balanced, realistic thinking.
Exposure Therapy
Avoidance is one of the main drivers of anxiety. Exposure therapy involves gradually and systematically facing feared situations in a safe, controlled way. Starting with less challenging situations and building up to more difficult ones, this technique helps the brain learn that feared outcomes rarely occur and that anxiety naturally decreases over time.
Behavioural Activation
Anxiety often leads to withdrawal and inactivity, which worsens mood and reinforces fear. Behavioural activation encourages scheduling and engaging in meaningful activities, even when you do not feel like it. This breaks the cycle of avoidance and builds momentum toward recovery.
Grounding Techniques
The 5-4-3-2-1 technique is a simple yet powerful tool for acute anxiety: name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. This shifts focus from anxious thoughts to the present moment.
Thought Records
Writing down anxious thoughts and examining them objectively helps create distance from overwhelming emotions. A thought record typically captures the situation, the automatic thought, the emotion, evidence for and against the thought, and a balanced alternative thought.
