Psychotherapy, often called talk therapy, encompasses a wide range of approaches designed to help people overcome mental health challenges, improve relationships, and live more fulfilling lives. Understanding the different types can help you choose the approach that best fits your needs and preferences.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It is structured, goal-oriented, and typically short-term (8–20 sessions). CBT is one of the most researched therapies and is effective for anxiety, depression, panic disorder, PTSD, and many other conditions. It involves identifying and challenging unhelpful thought patterns and developing practical coping skills.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Rooted in psychoanalytic traditions, psychodynamic therapy explores unconscious patterns, early relationships, and unresolved conflicts that shape current behaviour. It tends to be longer-term and less structured than CBT. It is particularly effective for chronic depression, personality disorders, and relationship difficulties.
Humanistic Therapy
Humanistic approaches emphasise personal growth, self-actualisation, and the therapeutic relationship. Person-centred therapy (Rogerian) provides unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness. Gestalt therapy focuses on present-moment awareness and personal responsibility.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Originally developed for borderline personality disorder, DBT combines CBT techniques with mindfulness and acceptance strategies. It emphasises four skill areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies alongside commitment and behaviour-change strategies to increase psychological flexibility. The goal is not to eliminate difficult feelings but to live a meaningful life in their presence.
Other Notable Approaches
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): Focuses on the connection between mood and relationships
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT): Combines CBT with mindfulness meditation
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR): Specifically for trauma
Family Systems Therapy: Examines individual problems within the family context
